24TH PUBLIC LECTURE OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OWERRI

AUTHOR: Professor Agwu, Nkwa Amadi

THEME: Environmental Health and Sanitation as Panacea to Disease Control and                                Prevention

SCHOOL: School of Health Technology (SOHT)

AFFILIATION: Federal University of Technology Owerri

This lecture provides evidence that health and environmental risks are significant in the cause of human morbidity and mortality. From SANA reports in Africa, there are increased risks resulting from environmental degradation, e.g., disease vectors from natural factors, drought, floods and drinking water contaminated with organic pollutants both in rural and urban settings. Globally, nearly one quarter of all deaths and of the total disease burden can be attributed to environmental status. In children, environmental risks factors can account for slightly more than one-third of the disease burden. These findings have important policy implications, as the environmental risks factors can be modified by established, cost-effective interventions.
