ISOLATION, PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AN ANTI-MICROBIAL COMPOUND FROM ACIDIC METABOLITE OF GARCINIA KOLA EXTRACT

This study focuses on the isolation, purification  and characterization of an anti-microbial
compound from acidic metabolite of Garcinia kola extract.The crude ethanol extracts were
screened by agar-well diffusion method and the activities of the extract were further determined by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The inhibition zones ranged from 0 – 30 mm on micro-organisms such as Staph. Aureus, Streptococcus spp, Salmonnella typhi, Escherichia coli and Coliform bacilli. Column chromatography was used to purify the bioactive compound from acidicmetabolite of Garcinia Kola extract which was used to identify the phyto components of the fractions; CF1, CF2, CF3, CF4, CF5, CF6, CF7 and CF8 which revealed that the CF5 has the highest at 30mm on Streptococcus spp. The CF5 was characterized using IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Analyses of the combined spectroscopic data suggest the presence of ketone, benzene and 1,2-diol of polyphenol. It was concluded that the compound (CF5) could be flavanones, probably flavanone. The results obtained from this study justify the use of this plant in traditional medicine and provide leads which could be further exploited for the development of new and potent antimicrobials.
